Our Journey
Twelve months ago, just before his long-awaited rugby league grand final, our 15-year-old son was very sick. Over the course of just three weeks, he lost 7 kilograms, his energy, and his usual spark. Concerned and unsure, we rushed him to the emergency department at Gosford Public Hospital, where he was soon diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It was a Friday afternoon—a moment that would forever change our lives.
As we absorbed the diagnosis, we felt a mix of shock and gratitude. Fortunately, Callum’s fitness and strength, developed through his dedication to sports, seemed to help him through the worst of it. Now, managing his diabetes requires constant vigilance, especially to prevent the serious risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. We monitor his blood glucose levels closely and work with his healthcare team to ensure he has the best care and support, adjusting his plan as needed. While the journey hasn’t been easy, Callum’s resilience and determination inspire us every day.
