Welcome to my personal Team BreakthroughT1D (formerly JDRF) fundraising page!
I have joined Team BreakthroughT1D to raise funds for the millions of people all over the world living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help BreakthroughT1D fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
Many of you will know that I was diagnosed with T1D 18 years ago when I was just 8 years old. Having T1D is a significant challenge - it is a 24/7, 365-day-a-year condition from which you get no break. It requires constant management, no matter what is happening in your life. Further, to treat the disease, those with T1D have to inject themselves with a drug which, if you don't get the measurements right, can be deadly. Without proper management, T1D can lead to serious health complications.
Managing the disease has become easier due to amazing
research conducted by organisations such as BreakthroughT1D. BreakthroughT1D is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organisation with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar BreakthroughT1D is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you. The amazing work of BreakthroughT1D over the years has allowed those living with T1D such as myself to gain access to better and more cost-effective means of treatment, which allow me to live my life to the fullest - including being able to run marathons!
